Times Are Changing
For generations, retirement was presented as the finish line—a time to stop working, slow down, and finally “rest.” But today, many people are finding that this old definition no longer fits. Life expectancy and improved health mean that retirement isn’t an ending at all—it’s simply the beginning of an entirely new chapter. But the prevailing old thought patterns remain stuck in the heads of many.
Let’s Take a look at the Challenges
Too often, people step into retirement with little more than a financial plan. They scarcely think about the changes that are about to occur – things like how their identity might shift without the work structures that were in place and are no longer there, or how their interests might shift from the ones they had when they were working.
Time takes on a new meaning. Almost everyone working craves more time. We want time to be with friends, for vacations away, more time with family, and grandkids. When they move into retirement, time slows down, there is more of it – sometimes too much. Retirement can feel less like freedom and more like drifting.

Redefining Your Last Chapter As Your Most Brilliant
What if we redefined retirement, as a reimagining of it as the most brilliant stage of our lives? This connotes opportunities for growth, contribution, and deeper connections and new and different communities. It can be a time to explore postponed passions, relationship building that you didn’t have time for, mentoring younger people or family, or even launch a “second act” career or service venture.
Finding the Courage to Take a Stand for Your Life
Redefining retirement is about courage —the courage to imagine what’s next, beyond typical expectations to be the most phenomenal chapter that will surprise you, make you laugh, and cause some serious joy. Because retirement isn’t about stepping away. It’s about stepping into new possibilities, with purpose.
