How do you deal with uncertainty?
Many prefer avoidance. This might seem like a good strategy – don’t rock the boat – yours or that of others.
But there is a cost to avoidance. It comes with disengagement and anxiety… and the problem is still there.
How does it show up?
Things left unsaid in a meeting where many are hoping someone else will name the problem.
The idea left unshared
The decision to postpone
Avoidance also helps to expand toxic environments. Performance takes a dive.
Uncertainty feels dangerous to us physically. We feel the tension in our bodies and our heads. And yet, it is a misleading signal, possibly left over from another era in which flight was the better course than fight.
It’s better to start considering uncertainty in a safe space so you will give yourself the freedom to expand your awareness as you go.
Here is one thing you can do today:
Identify one thing that feels uncertain in your life that makes you uncomfortable and make some time to be quiet and explore it.
Notice what you might gain if you move forward, what actions you might take, and how you might feel when you do so.
And, notice the possible implications of taking no action and those consequences.
